THURSDAY NET: I apologise for the confusion re the start time after Daylight Saving ended. We usually drop back to 7.30pm, but I was advised 8pm would be better for those down south. However, I’m now told that 7.30pm is the preferred option – so 7.30 it shall be. Cest' la vie!

The March GO QRP night runs on Saturday 27th Mar:
- 40m and above from 8pm to 9pm (NZDT)
- 80m from 9pm to 10pm (NZDT)

See you on air!

Can someone please take tomorrow nights net as I will not be available.
Cheers, ZL2OZ
February's GO QRP night runs on Saturday 27th Feb:
- 40m and above from 8pm to 9pm (NZDT)
- 80m from 9pm to 10pm (NZDT)

This event coincides with the Jock White field day (JWFD) this year.  Some minor accommodations will be made to the GO QRP rules to enable us to interact with the Jock White stations:

- Cyphers (index / serial no) from JWFD may be used in your GO QRP logs (no need to use a separate serial number for Go QRP)
- When contacting JWFD stations, you may use the Jock White 'branch number' for both Name and location in your GO QRP logs
- You may assume Portable for JWFD field stations
- You may assume 'home station' for non-branch JWFD stations
- You may assume QRO for JWFD stations

If you wish to claim worked-station 'portable', 'QRP' or 'backcountry' bonus points for any contact other than where indicated above, you will need to exchange that information as usual.

There is the opportunity to make a large number of contacts from your QRP setup on the night of this combined event - so give it a go and show them what QRP can do!
The formatting and score calculation on the lower lines in the 2021 Go QRP log spreadsheet (version 21.0) displays incorrectly.  This is only a display issue on the spreadsheet - the correct scores will still be shown once the log is uploaded to the website.

I have posted corrected versions (version 21.1) of the blank logsheets on the site, or you can download them directly below. Please use the corrected log sheets for all future logs to avoid confusion:

Apologies to all - not the best start to 2021!

The 2021 season of GO QRP Night starts on the 30th of January 2021, running for 2 hours:
    • 8pm to 9pm (HF bands from 40m to 10m)
    • 9pm to 10pm (80m only)

Go QRP night is a monthly contest for QRP operators run by the NZ QRPers group. The event runs on the last Saturday of each month throughout the year with awards given at the end of the year for the highest scores in each category.

Go QRP aims to encourage both QRP operation and backcountry / portable operation. As such we award bonus points for working each of these modes.  We also aim to demonstrate to other operators what can be achieved by QRP operation – so don’t be shy to work other QRO operators during the contest and show them what low power can achieve – you’ll get points for those contacts too.

This year we are trialing an expansion of the contest into HF bands other than 80m.  As such the contest will run in two hours, with the first hour being 40m and above, and the second hour being 80m only.  Scores will be counted separately for both hours, and separate awards given for 80m-only operation and for all-band operation.

If you want to participate on 80m only, then that’s fine, you’ll be competing only against others’ scores from that hour. The 80m-only start time is unchanged from last year’s contest, so 80m-only operators will notice little change.

A summary of the rules is available at:

The full Go QRP 2021 rules can be downloaded from:

Log sheets for 2021 can be downloaded from:

Please use the updated logsheets for all 2021 contest dates.

A big thankyou to those who provided feedback on the GO QRP format and who helped develop the contest for 2021.

Another successful trip with two NZ visitors.
Both enjoyed the 'Roughing It!' experience instead of the catered version where everything is laid on. Both visitors are involved in IT and Education and have been living in NZ for nearly two years. They wanted a "Real Tramping" experience instead of the highly catered for, and expensive version. Toshi   is a photographer who works for a Travel Agency in Japan, and ended up with some excellent photos. Unfortunately Anaru sprained her left ankle on the evening of our arrival at Dominie Hut, but coped well on the walk out to Little's Clearing and our transport.
Highlight of the trip was seeing a 'flight' of short tailed bats in the twilight at Makahu Saddle. Must be a small colony somewhere nearby.
My thanks to those who came up on 3.690Mhz, and to the helper who got hold of our transport and changed arrangements for us. Cheers.

Hi All,

GO QRP night will continue to be run an a monthly competition on the last Saturday of each month in 2021.

A few minor changes are on the table - so please give feedback if you have views on them.  If no feedback is received then the changes will proceed as below.

1) Log Validation.

Scoring will be updated so that validated contacts with all mandatory fields correct will receive an extra 2 points for the contact.  This is aimed to get as many as possible submitting logs, and to reward people for accurate log keeping. Validated contacts are where both parties submit a log with the mandatory fields for the contact agreeing.

Clarification: For you to receive the bonus points only the details the other party sends you must be correct in your log.  The details that you send to the other party count for their validation bonus.
Clarification: QSO points will not be deducted for incorrect logs. QSO's where the logs disagree will receive the base QSO points but will receive no validation bonus.

2) Mandatory log details

The following fields will be mandatory details for a contact:
- Index and RS(T) sent
- Index and RS(T) received
- Both callsigns
- Home station or portable
- QRP or QRO
- Local or DX
- Time*
- Band**

Additionally, users are encouraged to record:
- Location
- Name

3) Time*

Times should agree to the nearest +/- 1 minute to claim the validated contact points.  Participants are recommended to 'exchange' the contact time as part of their contact to ensure this.

4) Bands**

There have been requests to open the contest up to more bands, and others fearing this will 'disperse' participants too widely.

The suggested compromise is a 2 hour contest - first hour being all HF bands, second hour being 80m only.  The start time of the 80m hour will be the same as last year so if you wish to participate as 80m only then the competition will be almost unchanged for you.  The start time of the 'any band' hour will be 1 hour before the 80m start time - to attempt to coincide with times when the higher frequency bands are 'open' for DX contacts.

Clarification: The two categories ('80m only' and 'all bands') would be scored separately with winners in each category.

Feedback on this is particularly welcome.

5) Scoring

The 'bonus' for DX contacts will be increased to ensure that a DX contact still scores more than a validated local contact.

Clarification: DX contacts will also be eligible for the validation bonus in addition to the DX bonus, where the DX station submits a log.

===

The finalised 2021 rules will be published in the January Newsletter - so please get any feedback in this week to allow them to be written up.

Feedback can be posted here or emailed to admin@qrp.nz.

Running of Go QRP has transitioned to Matt, ZL4NVW.  I have changed the log sheet format slightly to allow to automating of the scoring and display of logs on the group website.  This will make the job of running the competition simpler, and also allow full transparency as all competitors logs will now be visible on the website.  Entries in the old log format will require retyping into the new forms before they can be counted – so please use the new sheets.

Thanks to Wayne, ZL2OZ for all his efforts getting the competition up and running.

As of the start of October I will be taking on some of the group roles & responsabilities to lighten the load on Wayne ZL2OZ. This includes the coordination of GO QRP night and awards.

There will be a period of transition as I get on top of these roles, so please be patient.

Any questions, ideas or offers are welcome - just use the QRPers NZ Group Chat forum to post them.
